Takeda Takes Aim At Cloud Computing With Accenture, AWS Partnership

Companies everywhere are turning to the cloud to improve their efficiency and make better decisions. Joining their ranks is Takeda, a pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company. The largest company of its kind in Asia, and one of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world by revenue, Takeda specializes in oncology, rare diseases, neuroscience, and gastroenterology.

With a pipeline of over a dozen new molecular entities, Takeda is also one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world by sheer number of products. This positions Takeda well for its newest venture - using AI and cloud computing to augment its core business.

A partnership with Accenture and Amazon Web Services (AWS) has empowered Takeda to head the COVID R&D Alliance, a data sharing endeavor between the largest and most productive pharmaceutical companies in the world, with the common goal of accelerating the research and commercialization of COVID-19 treatments, vaccines, and cures. This endeavor, it is estimated, would have taken three months to design and implement without cloud computing and data sharing. Takeda accomplished it in just five days.

While a new move for Takeda, the cloud computing feat is just another notch in the hat of the decade-long partnership between AWS and Accenture - which are stalwarts and pioneers in the cloud services industry.

Takeda is also using cloud computing to increase the efficiency and productivity of the blood plasma donation supply chain, aiming its sights at a 65% increase in overall production by 2024 by digitally connecting its collection centers.

These recent endeavors are only a small foreshadowing of what Takeda has in store. “My vision is that, in less than 10 years, every Takeda employee will be empowered by an artificial intelligence assistant to help make better decisions,” said Takeda President and CEO Christophe Weber.

This is a powerful idea that many companies have committed to, but few have shown as possible. Takeda is taking the steps to change that by actively creating waves in the industry with cloud technology.

Particularly reliant upon data, the pharmaceuticals industry is perhaps the one best suited for a cloud revolution. With every employee backed by lightning fast data analysis and AI-powered scientific recommendations, Takeda will be well-positioned to light the way to the future of healthcare IT.
